The Mammoths that Escaped the Kingdom of Erlik Khan

A film by Tamara Kotevska

About the film

Through the eyes of young Vladik and his father Roma, a remote Dolgan community in the Siberian Arctic is pushed to the brink as outside forces make survival impossible, forcing them into a dangerous, taboo trade that tests their bond, their beliefs and the cost of staying true to their heritage.

One thousand kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, the Dolgan have herded reindeer across the tundra for two centuries. Their mythology warns that the mammoth remains locked in the permafrost belong to Erlik Khan, lord of the underworld, and are cursed.

Now the permafrost is melting. Twenty-year-old Vladik sees the exposed tusks as the only way out of scarcity; his father Roma, an elder of the herders, sees the omens. The film follows the two of them as the trade pulls the community apart and the tundra itself begins to give up what it held.

Development is ongoing. Production stage, partners and dates will be confirmed with the company.
